Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education

Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education

An executive order signed by Governor Joe Frank Harris created the State Board of Postsecondary Vocational Education. The Quality Basic Education Act expanded the responsibilities of the State Board of Postsecondary Vocational Education and set in motion the process which would begin converting technical institutes from local to state governance. In 1988 the DTAE was created by statute, and in 2000, HB 1187 was passed, allowing technical institutes to change their names to "technical college" and creating a funding formula that can accommodate the steady growth of the system. Currently, there are 34 technical colleges in Georgia's technical college system.

The mission of the Department of Technical and Adult Education is to contribute to the economic, educational, and community development of Georgia by providing quality technical education, adult literacy education, continuing education, and customized business and industry workforce training to the citizens of Georgia.

We have 276 employees under the leadership of Ronald W. Jackson - Interim Commissioner .
